London (UNN): Gareth Southage has named his provisional England squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup and omitted both Jack Wilshere and Joe Hart. Wilshere was included in Southgate’s previous squad ahead of March’s friendlies against Netherlands and Italy, but was forced to withdraw due to a minor ankle injury. The 26-year-old missed Arsenal’s final two matches of the Premier League season and Southgate has opted not to take a risk on a player who has not represented his country since England’s ill-fated Euro 2016 campaign. Hart, meanwhile, England’s first choice goalkeeper at the last three major tournaments, misses out on selection following a turbulent season on-loan at West Ham. The 31-year-old joined the east London club from Manchester City following a year in Serie A with Torino, but lost his place in the side midway through the campaign to Adrian. A late season burst of form failed to convince Southgate Hart’s services would be required in Russia with Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope and Jack Butland set to contest the No.1 shirt.
England World Cup Squad
Jordan Pickford (Everton), Jack Butland (Stoke), Nick Pope (Burnley) Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose (both Tottenham), Harry Maguire (Leicester), Phil Jones (Man Utd), John Stones, Kyle Walker (both Man City), Gary Cahill (Chelsea)
Jordan Henderson, (Liverpool), Eric Dier, Dele Alli (both Tottenham), Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young (both Man Utd), Fabian Delph (Man City), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea),
Raheem Sterling (Man City), Jamie Vardy (Leicester), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal). Standby: Tom Heaton Heaton, James Tarkowski (both Burnley), Lewis Cook (Bournemouth), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jake Livermore (WBA). Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold represents Southgate’s most surprising selection given the teenager is yet to earn his first senior cap. The 19-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic breakthrough season under the management of Jurgen Klopp and played a key role in the Merseyside club’s run to the Champions League final. There is disappointment, however, for his club teammate Adam Lallana, whose injury-plagued campaign has cost him a place in the 23-man squad. Lallana played a key role in England’s solid qualification campaign but has only made the standby list which also includes Jake Livermore. England World Cup Schedule

I believe this is a squad which we can be excited about,’ said Southgate. ‘It is a young group, but with some really important senior players so I feel the balance of the squad is good, both in terms of its experience, its character and also the positional balance. ‘We have a lot of energy and athleticism in the team, but players that are equally comfortable in possession of the ball and I think people can see the style of play we’ve been looking to develop. ‘The selection process has been over months really, it’s not just been the last few weeks. We feel the team are improving and we want to continue that momentum.’
